# PrestaShop hosting: a server built for your store

PrestaShop hosting is a server set up for one application and for its busiest hour of the year, not for the average of dozens of unrelated sites sharing the same box. We size the specs to your catalogue and to peak sales, set limits, cache and backups, then watch load times. You pay the subscription to the provider directly, since we don't resell hosting.

Starting point

## When does a cheap server start costing more than it saves?

Three moments where hosting stops being a line on a bill and becomes the reason the store sells less. Each one can be measured before you decide to move.

**

### A category page takes seconds to load

The most expensive page to render is a filtered product listing, because it queries the database the hardest. On shared hosting the same page can be twice as slow in the evening as in the morning, and the customer only ever sees the load time, never the cause.

**

### Peak sales bring the store down

A campaign launches, traffic multiplies, and the store stops responding at exactly the hour you're paying for in ads. The server needs sizing for that hour, not for the yearly average.

**

### The admin panel is slower than the store

Processing orders, importing prices and generating invoices eat time nobody sees in any report. It's the same server and the same database, just viewed from the back office.

Definition

### How is PrestaShop hosting different from regular hosting?

**PrestaShop hosting is** a server set up for one application and its peak, not for the average of a few hundred unrelated sites sharing the same machine. The difference shows up in three places: in the limits the platform actually uses, in the cache layer, and in what happens to load time when traffic multiplies within an hour.

Limits sized to the platform

Process memory, execution time, upload size and the number of concurrent database connections. Shared hosting's default values are lower than what a store uses during a catalogue import.

Cache as part of the configuration

Application cache, page cache and database query cache work together or not at all. Turned on without order, they can show a customer someone else's basket, so this is a configuration job, not a switch to flip.

Headroom for the peak, not the average

The server is sized to the busiest hour of the year, because that hour decides your sales. The rest of the time it should be cheap, not barely enough.

Scope

## PrestaShop hosting: exactly what we do

- ✓ Sizing server parameters to catalogue size and peak traffic
- ✓ Configuration for PrestaShop: PHP version, limits, OPcache, page cache
- ✓ Database and index tuning for the catalogue and its filters
- ✓ SSL certificate, backups and a tested store-recovery plan
- ✓ Load-time monitoring: TTFB and Core Web Vitals, including at peak
- ✓ Moving the store to a new server with no interruption to sales

Price

Quoted after audit, you pay the hosting subscription to the provider

Sizing and configuration are usually part of a build or of care

### What this service doesn't cover

- We don't resell hosting: the agreement and uptime SLA are between you and the provider
- We don't maintain corporate servers outside e-commerce

How it works, step by step

## From measuring your current server to a move with no sales downtime

Three stages. The first ends with numbers that show whether moving is even worth it.

1.

1

### Measuring what you have

a few days

Server response time, database load, behaviour at peak, and the cost of your current service. Without this, moving is a bet, not a decision.

2.

2

### Configuring the environment

a few days

A server for this platform version, limits, cache layers, backups and certificates. We set up the store as a copy first, so we can compare load times on the same data.

3.

3

### Switch-over and observation

1 week

DNS records change during the quietest traffic hours, and the old server stays on for the observation period. For the first week we check errors and response time daily.

Service boundaries

## Do you have to buy PrestaShop hosting from your store contractor?

Short answer

No. You buy hosting from a provider and pay them directly, and we size and maintain the infrastructure the store runs on: the server, the database, the cache layers and backups. We don't sell hosting, so we have no stake in moving you if your current server meets PrestaShop's requirements.

For us, server sizing comes from measurement, not from a provider's price list: we read logs, peak traffic and how long the heaviest page takes. Too big a server costs every month, too small costs once, on the day of a promotion. JustIdea isn't a hosting company and takes no commission from any provider, so sometimes the recommendation is to change nothing at all.

![A server sized from peak-traffic measurements, with headroom for a promotion, at a provider you pay directly](https://justidea.agency/assets/ill-serwis.svg)

### This is the right service

- The store slows down during promotions or stops responding under heavier traffic.
- Nobody has checked whether the backups can actually be restored, or how long that takes.
- You're migrating to PrestaShop and the server needs sizing from scratch.

### Start somewhere else

- The store is slow because of images and scripts, not the server: that's speed optimisation.
- You want hours for store code and a contracted response time: that's post-launch care.
- You're building a new store: hosting sizing is part of that build.

## What someone who's already moved a store to a new server asks

**

### Will the store be unavailable during the move

No. A full copy of the store runs on the new server under a temporary address, and the switch-over is a DNS record change we prepare with a short time-to-live. The old server stays on until every cached response has expired. We plan the switch-over window outside peak sales hours.

**

### What happens to orders placed during the switch-over

Before the switch we run an incremental database sync, so orders from the last few hours land on the new server too. Sales aren't paused, but for a short window part of the traffic still sees the old server, which is why we pick the lowest-load window for it.

**

### Shared, VPS or dedicated server

It's decided by the number of products and variants, the number of concurrent sessions at peak, and whether integrations with their own request limits are running in the background. A store with a large catalogue and filters loads the database completely differently from a store with two hundred products at the same traffic, so the parameters come from measurement, not from a package name.

**

### Whose server is it, and what happens if you switch provider

You sign the hosting agreement directly with the provider, so its uptime SLA binds them to you, not to us. We size the parameters, configure the environment and maintain it, but you have the access from day one. Changing agency doesn't mean another move.

**

### What to look for in a store hosting offer

Four parameters decide how a store runs, and they rarely sit on the front page of an offer: PHP version with its limits, cache such as LiteSpeed or Redis, NVMe SSD disks, and backups. On backups, check three things: how often they run, how far back they reach, and whether restoring the store is included or billed separately. Good PrestaShop hosting is judged by these items, not by the number of gigabytes in the package.

**

### What we don't sell, and why it matters

We're not a hosting company and take no commission from any provider, so our recommendation follows from your store's size and PrestaShop's requirements, not from a partner's price list. Installing the store, configuring the admin panel, moving it from your current server and technical support when something breaks are our job. The subscription itself stays on your invoice, with your provider, and that's a difference you notice after a year.

What it's built on

## What PrestaShop hosting is really made of

Hosting isn't one line on an invoice, it's four layers, and each one can become a bottleneck on its own. This is what we configure in each of them, and at the end, how long the move itself takes.

### The machine and the system

Cores, memory, disk, and whether resources are guaranteed or shared with neighbours. This is also where the uptime SLA the provider writes into the contract lives. For a store, what matters isn't the average but the worst hour of the year, because that's when the server either keeps up or costs you orders.

### The application layer

PHP version, per-process memory limits, code cache, connection compression and encryption. The same machine with default settings versus with PrestaShop-specific configuration is a difference in load time you see without spending an extra penny.

### The database

Tuning for the catalogue and its filters, indexes matched to your store's real queries, cleaning up tables that grow on their own. On a large catalogue, this is where most of a category page's load time hides.

### Backups and monitoring

Three copies, in two locations, one of them off the store's own server, plus an alert that wakes a human before a customer notices. We set this up once and maintain it server-side. Hours for store code and a contracted response time to tickets are post-launch care, a separate agreement.

### How long the move takes

The move itself usually takes two to six hours of work, and then up to a day for the address change to propagate across the internet. The store keeps running the whole time, because the old server stays on until the last visitor reaches the new one.

## What PrestaShop requires from a server

**

### PHP version and limits

PrestaShop 8 runs on PHP 8.1 and newer, and older store versions on older PHP that providers are already dropping support for. Beyond the version itself, the limits matter: per-process memory, maximum execution time and upload size. Many providers' defaults are set for a brochure site, not a store running a catalogue import.

**

### Database and disk

MySQL or MariaDB in a version supported by your store's release, on an SSD or NVMe disk. On a catalogue with filters, the database is the bottleneck, so what matters isn't just disk size but how many operations per second the provider guarantees.

**

### Cache: OPcache and Redis

OPcache holds compiled code, so PHP doesn't reprocess the same files on every visit. Redis stores sessions and store cache outside the database, which takes a large share of load off it once traffic grows. Both are free, and both are often disabled by default.

**

### SSL certificate and domain

An SSL certificate is a requirement today, not an extra: without one, browsers flag the store as unsafe and payments won't work. A free, auto-renewing certificate is entirely enough for a store, unless you take card payments through your own form.

**

### Backups and panel access

Daily backups stored off the store's own server, with the ability to restore a single file, not only the whole thing. On top of that, access to the server's admin panel and console, because without them every configuration change means a ticket to the provider and waiting.

Doubts before you commit

## Four things we hear about hosting

Each one gets answered with a measurement, not a provider's price list. JustIdea doesn't resell hosting, so we make nothing extra from any of these answers.

### “Hosting for a few pounds a month is enough”

It's enough to launch the store. It stops being enough at the first promotion, when a hundred people hit the basket at once and shared hosting hands them a sliver of a CPU. The yearly cost of hosting is then a fraction of what's left on the table in a single day with a slow store.

### “Moving the store risks downtime”

We move a copy, test it on the new server under a working address, and only then switch the domain over, with a rollback possible within minutes. The store keeps running on the old server until the new one passes every test.

### “We don't know how much power we need”

Nobody does without measuring. We read logs and analytics traffic, check how long the heaviest page takes at peak, and size a server with headroom for a promotion, not for an average Tuesday. Too big a server costs you every month, too small costs you once, but painfully.

### “We'd rather stick with hosting we know”

You can stay with your current provider if it meets PrestaShop's requirements: PHP version, memory, cache, backups. We check that in the audit and tell you whether to stay or move. We don't sell hosting, so we have no stake in moving you.

FAQ

## PrestaShop hosting: questions before you decide

**### Shared, VPS or dedicated: which server for an online store?**

Shared hosting is enough for a catalogue of up to a few hundred products and calm traffic, provided the provider offers a current PHP version, NVMe SSD disks and Redis cache. A VPS makes sense past a few thousand products, warehouse integrations and traffic spikes during promotions. A dedicated server comes into play for large stores with their own back office. We don't sell hosting, so we advise by store size, not by provider commission.

**### What are PrestaShop's server requirements?**

A current PHP version with the right memory and execution-time limits, a MySQL or MariaDB database, an SSL certificate, access to the server's admin panel and the ability to install extensions. On top of that, cache: LiteSpeed or Redis can cut load times several times over on the same hardware. A package missing these three things will choke a store regardless of how much disk space it promises.

**### Does hosting affect a store's speed and Google rankings?**

Yes, in two ways. Directly: server response time is one of the ranking signals, and a long load time kills conversion regardless of position. Indirectly: on an overloaded server, the search engine's crawler visits fewer pages in the same amount of time, so a large catalogue gets indexed more slowly. That's why a speed audit checks server parameters first, and only then the theme's code.

**### Do I buy hosting from you?**

No. You sign the agreement directly with the provider, so the server stays yours even if we stop working together. We size the parameters, configure it and keep an eye on performance.

**### How much does PrestaShop store hosting cost?**

It depends on catalogue size and peak traffic, which is why we quote it after an audit. For scale: a store turning over €1M a year loses more in a single day with an unavailable basket than a VPS sized to that traffic costs it for a whole year. For a store like that, the subscription itself usually runs to a few thousand pounds a year, paid to the provider.

**### Shared or VPS?**

For a store that's genuinely selling, shared hosting ends in a performance drop at peak, exactly when it costs you the most. The recommendation comes from an audit, not from a provider's price list.

**### Will moving the store to a new server affect Google rankings?**

No, as long as the URLs stay unchanged, and that's a condition of the move, not a side effect of it. Only the location serving the same store under the same address changes. A shorter server response time actually helps, since it's one of the page-quality signals.

**### How much power does a PrestaShop store need?**

It depends on the number of products, variants and filters in the catalogue, and on traffic during the worst hour of the year, not the monthly average. A store with a thousand products and extensive filters loads the database harder than a store with five thousand simple listings at the same traffic.

**### Who's responsible for backups and recovery after an outage?**

We set up and monitor the backups, and they're kept with the provider you have the agreement with. A backup alone isn't enough, what matters is a tested restore: we set up daily backups with a long enough retention period and restore the store from them on a test environment at least once. That's how you find out how long it really takes, and whether the file can even be unpacked.
