# Store migration to PrestaShop with a redirect map

We move stores from Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom platform, including migrations from Polish-market platforms such as Shoper or Comarch ERP XL e-Sklep. The redirect map is built before launch, and the switch has a rollback plan.

Starting point

## What holds back the decision to migrate a store to PrestaShop?

It's rarely about the subscription price. Three things below come up in conversations most often, and each one can be settled before the move, not after.

**

### Fear of losing search rankings

Changing URLs without a redirect map wipes out visibility built up over years. That risk is real, but not inevitable: the map is built before launch and checked address by address.

**

### Data scattered across systems

Products in one place, customers in another, invoices in a third, and order history only in the old platform's panel. Without an inventory, migration carries that mess along with the data, and the gaps surface at the first year-old complaint.

**

### Integrations built for the old store

Couriers, payments, the warehouse system and the wholesaler were connected over the years, often by different people. Migrating without a list of them ends with discovering the gaps after the switch.

Definition

### What does an online store migration actually involve?

**An online store migration is** the process of moving three things at once: data, addresses and integrations. Data means products, customers, order history and content; addresses mean the entire URL structure together with the 301 redirect map; integrations mean everything that was hooked into the old platform. Skip any of these three and you only find out after the switch: the store either stops invoicing or disappears from search.

Data, with history

Not just the catalogue, but also customer accounts, orders and invoices. They decide whether you can handle a year-old complaint after the migration.

Addresses and redirects

Every old URL gets a target, and we never build redirect chains. This part protects search rankings and is checked before launch, not after.

Integrations mapped from the source

Couriers, payments, wholesalers, ERP and marketing tools. The list is built before the migration, because a missing integration is usually discovered on the first day of selling.

Scope

## PrestaShop migration: what we actually do

- ✓ Audit of the current store: structure, custom features, integrations
- ✓ Migrating products, categories, customers, order history, invoices and content
- ✓ Moving the URL structure and building a 301 redirect map from Search Console data
- ✓ Reconfiguring integrations: BaseLinker, couriers, payment gateways
- ✓ Implementing the design on the new platform
- ✓ Testing and going live outside the peak sales period

What it looks like step by step

## From auditing the old store to a switch with a rollback plan

Four stages. The first ends with a decision on whether migration makes sense at all, and it's the only point where backing out is cheap. At JustIdea, no address goes live until the redirect map has been checked address by address.

1.

1

### Audit and inventory

1-2 weeks

A record of data, addresses, integrations and features built for the current store. It ends with a scope and a quote, and sometimes a recommendation to stay where you are.

2.

2

### Moving data and addresses

4-8 weeks

Products, categories, customers, orders and content, alongside a redirect map built address by address. Migration runs in repeatable passes, so the data can be refreshed right before launch.

3.

3

### Integrations and testing

3-6 weeks

Payments, couriers, warehouse and accounting system connected and checked on the full order cycle. This is where gaps invisible in the inventory show up.

4.

4

### Switch with a rollback plan

1-2 weeks

The old store stays live until the new one has run a few days at full traffic. Going back is a DNS change, so a decision to roll back doesn't need a new project.

Where this service ends

## Migrate a store to PrestaShop, or build a new one?

Short answer

Migration is cheaper when the engine changes but the catalogue, processes and design stay: you pay for data, addresses and integrations. When you're rebuilding the design and processes anyway, implementing a new store works out cheaper, with migration as one stage inside it rather than a separate project.

At JustIdea, migration starts with an audit that records the catalogue, integrations and addresses, and ends with a redirect map ready before the switch. Without that map, the store loses rankings on launch day, and that's the one migration cost you can't undo.

The line against building a new store is simple: with migration you pay to move what you have, with implementation you pay to design it from scratch, with the move built in. Both get quoted after the same audit, so you don't have to guess which side you're on.

![The decision before migrating: move the current store to PrestaShop or build a new one from scratch](https://justidea.agency/assets/ill-sklepy-internetowe-migracja.svg)

### This is the right service

- You pay the platform a commission on revenue, and at your scale that's already a full-time salary.
- You need an integration the platform won't let you build.
- The catalogue or template has hit a limit that can't be worked around.
- The catalogue and processes stay as they are today, only the engine underneath changes.

### Start somewhere else

- The store is slow: start with a technical audit and speed optimisation.
- The store sells little because of content and visibility: that's store SEO.
- You want to stay on the platform, just redesign it: that's store design.
- You're rebuilding the catalogue, design and processes at the same time: that's building a PrestaShop store from scratch.
- You're staying on WooCommerce: we build stores there too, but that's a separate service.

## Six things worth knowing before a migration

**

### Customer passwords can't be moved

This isn't a limitation of our tools, it's a consequence of passwords being stored irreversibly, and every platform does it differently. Customers set a new password the first time they log in. Handled well, it looks like a new version of the store; handled badly, it looks like an outage. We send the notice before anyone sees a wrong-password message, with the reset link right there in it.

**

### We check module licences before the start, not during

Paid modules in the old store are sometimes licensed to a domain or a platform version, and some have no equivalent on the other side. Finding that out halfway through changes the schedule and the budget. That's why the audit opening a migration includes a list of modules with their licences, flagging which need buying again and which need writing from scratch.

**

### Redirects come from a map, not a rule

An automatic rule that rewrites URLs works as long as the category structure is identical, and it never is. So we build an address map product by product, by catalogue number or barcode, and check it by crawling the store before and after the switch. Addresses missing from the map show up the same day, not a month later in Search Console.

**

### Order history: we move all of it, or a chosen period

The full order history can be moved, and we usually do, because customers ask about invoices from years back. It's worth deciding deliberately though, since the longer the history, the bigger the database and the longer the backups. The alternative is to keep the full history archived on the old store and bring only recent years into the new one.

**

### A plan to go back to the old store exists from day one

The old store stays untouched on its own server until the new one has run a few days at full traffic. Going back is a DNS change, hours rather than days. We've never needed that plan on any migration, but it has to exist before anyone switches the first address.

**

### Moving PrestaShop to a new server or a new domain

These are two smaller jobs we do alongside a migration, or on their own. Moving a PrestaShop store to different hosting is a copy of files and database, a configuration change, and a check that the store works correctly at the new address; usually one evening outside selling hours. Changing the domain additionally needs a redirect map and updated URLs in the database, otherwise half the links in the store point to the old domain. We do both on a copy, and production keeps running until the switch.

When it's worth it

## Four reasons stores migrate to us

Migration is costly and labour-intensive, so it should have a specific reason. Below are four that come up most often in our practice, and one situation where we advise against it.

### The subscription platform stopped being enough

The store has grown, and the features you need simply can't be bought: per-customer pricing, custom cart logic, an integration the vendor doesn't support. At that point migration isn't a nice-to-have, it's a condition for further growth.

### Commission costs outgrew the cost of your own store

With platforms billed as a percentage of revenue, the bill grows with your sales. Past a certain point, the annual commission total exceeds the cost of building and running your own store, and that's the moment worth doing the maths on both.

### The store runs on an unsupported version

An old platform version nobody patches any more, with modules abandoned by their authors. An update stops being an update and becomes a rebuild, so you might as well plan it deliberately instead of waiting for a failure.

### You want to take back control of your data

Code, database and access on your side, with no exit fees and no asking a vendor's permission to integrate. For some businesses that's the main reason to migrate, and we think rightly so, because it decides who sets the terms three years from now.

### We advise against it: when the platform isn't the problem

A slow store, weak conversion or no traffic rarely come from the platform itself. Migration carries those problems to a new one, just at a higher price. In that case we start with an audit and say so plainly, even though migration would be the bigger job for us.

Client reviews

## You choose a migration contractor by track record, not by the pitch

When moving a store, the risk is concentrated in one window: the DNS switch either goes well, or it costs a week of lost sales and a ranking drop that takes months to win back. A rollback plan shortens that window, but doesn't remove the question of who you're trusting with it. These ratings were left by clients on three platforms, and on Clutch a review only reaches the profile after a call with the client.

Certifications and partnerships

## Migrating without someone on the vendor's side is a gamble

The same things always break when moving a store: redirects, integrations and measurement. Below are the statuses that give JustIdea access to vendor support on those three fronts, not just documentation.

### PrestaShop Expert ★★★

PrestaShop, agency programme

We know how the core behaves when moving a catalogue and attributes, because we work at the top tier of the agency programme. When the problem sits in the platform, we raise it through the partner channel, not on a forum.

### base. (BaseLinker)

BaseLinker, integration partnership

After the switch, it's not just the pages that need to come back up, but also orders, stock and courier labels. We test this integration before the migration, on a copy, with access to support on base.'s side.

### Google Premier Partner

Google, top tier of the Google Partners programme

The second thing that tends to break during migration is measurement: conversions, the product feed and tags. The status gives us support on Google's side, so rebuilding it doesn't wait in a general queue.

Doubts before working with us

## Four concerns we hear before a migration

All of them are reasonable, and all are answered by an audit before the switch, not by a promise.

### „Migration means losing our Google rankings”

You lose rankings if you switch a store without a redirect map. Every old category and product URL gets a target before the switch, and afterwards we check in Search Console that they all resolve. Google then sees the same store under new addresses.

### „We'll lose order history and customer accounts”

We move orders, customers and their addresses, and reset passwords through a secure flow, because old passwords can't be moved between platforms and no one can honestly promise that. The customer logs into the same account with the same history.

### „Warehouse and accounting integrations will stop working”

We list them in the audit before the quote is set, and each gets an equivalent in PrestaShop or a decision to route it another way. Migration without that list ends with a store that sells but doesn't invoice.

### „Migration takes too long for just moving a store”

Moving data is the smaller part of the work. The rest is the template, integrations, testing orders from cart to invoice, and two weeks on call after the switch. Cutting corners on migration costs the same amount of work anyway, just after the fact: with a sales outage and lost rankings someone has to win back.

FAQ

## PrestaShop migration: questions before you decide

**### What data can be moved, and what's left behind after migration?**

Data migration covers products with variants, images, descriptions and relations, categories with their structure, customer accounts with addresses, order history and statuses, invoices, discount codes, informational page content and blog posts. We also move URLs, because they carry your search rankings and let us set up redirects. Customer passwords don't move, because every platform stores them irreversibly: customers log into the same account with the same history and set a new password through a secure reset. The template and modules of the current platform don't move either. It's different code and a different architecture, so we rebuild the store's features on PrestaShop from scratch, and paid modules need their own licences. We import into a copy, and the live store keeps running throughout.

**### What does the migration process look like step by step?**

Four stages, the same as in the timeline above. Audit and inventory: how many products, which integrations, which features were built for the current store, and what can be moved. Moving data onto a copy, together with hosting, the PrestaShop version and panel configuration, alongside a 301 redirect map that your e-commerce SEO depends on after the platform change. Integrations and testing on the full order cycle, from cart to invoice. Finally, the domain switch and monitoring, and we don't delete the old store's backup for the first few weeks.

**### Will migrating to PrestaShop affect SEO and Google rankings?**

It will, which is why mapping addresses is its own stage, not an afterthought. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its equivalent in the new store, covering categories, products and blog posts. We build the map before launch using Search Console and Ahrefs data, so the addresses that actually drive traffic get priority. With a correct map, the drop is temporary and rankings usually settle within a few weeks, which is why we plan the switch outside the peak sales period. We won't promise zero change, because that would be dishonest. Skip this work and a platform change can wipe out years of SEO, and that's the most common reason a store owner regrets migrating alone.

**### How much does a PrestaShop migration cost?**

JustIdea quotes a migration after auditing the current store, because without a list of integrations and custom features, any figure would be a guess. The number of integrations drives the price far more than the number of products.

**### How long does a migration from another platform to PrestaShop take?**

Typically 10 to 20 weeks, depending on catalogue size and the number of integrations. The longest part is usually not the data itself, but reconfiguring integrations with the ERP, couriers and payments, plus testing before the switch.

**### What happens if something breaks after the switch?**

The old store stays functional until the new one is confirmed working correctly, and we plan the switch outside the peak sales period. The rollback plan is part of the project, not something improvised at night.

**### What about the integrations we have connected to the old store today?**

Every one needs reconfiguring, because keys and mappings are tied to a specific store. That's why the pre-migration audit starts with a list of integrations: wholesalers, couriers, payments, accounting and marketing systems. A missed integration is the most common cause of schedule slippage.

**### Can we migrate in stages instead of switching everything at once?**

We migrate and test the data in stages, well before launch, but the actual store switch happens once. Two stores accepting orders in parallel would mean two different truths about stock levels, and that's a more expensive problem than a single switch window outside the peak sales period.

**### Can we change the store's domain during migration?**

Yes, and sometimes that's the right moment to do it, since the addresses are being rebuilt anyway. Changing the domain needs its own redirect map from the old domain to the new one, a change notice in Search Console, and consistent structured data. We do that in one move together with the migration instead of two separate steps, because the second one always costs more.
