# Carrier integrations for a PrestaShop store

We connect carriers to the store: choosing delivery and a pickup point in the basket, automatic shipping labels generated from the store or from base., statuses flowing back to the order and to the customer. Tracking numbers stop moving between panels by hand, and 'where's my parcel' stops landing on your support team's desk.

Starting point

## What does packing orders across two panels at once really cost?

A minute spent re-typing one tracking number, across fifty parcels a day, adds up to around 200 hours a year lost to work that never shows up as a shipping cost. Carrier integrations connect the store to courier systems: choosing delivery in the basket, a shipping label, booking a pickup and a status flowing back to the customer with no support involved. Below are the three places where that bill grows fastest.

**

### A tracking number typed in by hand

The label is created in the carrier's panel, and the number comes back to the store by copy and paste. At the busiest point of the day that's hours of warehouse work, plus one mistake away from a parcel going to the wrong address.

**

### The customer asks where the parcel is

The order in the store still shows a status from before dispatch, so support checks the carrier's system by hand every time someone asks. It's the most common ticket in e-commerce, and the first thing that disappears after integration.

**

### One carrier for everything

A locker, a courier, an oversized parcel and an international shipment each have a different economics. A store with a single delivery method is overpaying on some orders and has no idea which ones.

Service boundaries

## How are carrier integrations different from a courier module?

Short answer

A courier module prints a label. Carrier integrations are the rules for choosing a carrier by weight, country and basket value, pickup points in the basket, shipping labels, statuses flowing back to the customer and return labels, tied into the warehouse or into base.

We work on your own agreements and accounts with carriers, at your rates, so the integration changes nothing about them. A new carrier gets added alongside your current one, so you compare cost and delivery time on your own parcels, not on a promise. For a store that's still being built, carriers are part of that build and you don't pay for them twice.

![An order passes through carrier-selection rules, a label, and a status flowing back to the customer with no support involved](https://justidea.agency/assets/ill-integracje.svg)

### This is the right service

- Support types tracking numbers into the carrier's panel by hand.
- Customers call asking where the parcel is, because they don't get statuses.
- You sell abroad and need a different carrier for each market.

### Start somewhere else

- Shipping labels already go through base.: the store just needs pickup points and statuses.
- The problem is payment, not delivery: that's payment gateway integrations.
- The integration already works and it's about keeping it running: that's post-launch care, not building the integration.

What it actually means

### A carrier integration isn't just a print button

**A carrier integration is** connecting the store to a courier's system in a way that closes the whole shipment loop: from choosing a delivery method in the basket, through the shipping label and pickup booking, to a status that reaches the customer on its own. Printing the label is the most visible part of this work, and the smallest.

Choosing delivery in the basket

A list of delivery methods with real cost, choosing a locker or pickup point from a map, free-shipping rules. This is the only place the integration affects conversion rather than warehouse work.

The label and the shipping document

Generating a shipping label from the store's panel or from base., one at a time or in bulk for a whole batch of orders. The tracking number comes back to the order automatically, with nothing typed in by hand.

Booking a pickup and the carrier's manifest

Requesting a carrier pickup for a specific time and a manifest of parcels to sign off on collection. This is the part that disappears from the warehouse's task list, and where recovered time shows up fastest.

Statuses and returns

The shipment status flows back to the order and out to the customer by email, so 'where's my parcel' stops landing on support's desk. A return label runs the opposite direction and shortens return handling.

Build process

## How to automate generating shipping labels

At JustIdea a typical integration wraps up in 2-4 weeks and has five stages, only one of which is coding. The rest is groundwork, and that's usually where timelines slip.

1.

1

### Carrier account and API access

Stage 1

We start with what you already have: the agreement, your client number and API credentials. Some carriers require access to be requested separately, and that's the most common reason a build waits, even though our side is ready.

2.

2

### Delivery methods in the basket

Stage 2

The list of carriers, costs, free-shipping thresholds and picking a pickup point from a map. It's the only part of the integration the buyer sees, and the only one that affects basket abandonment. You manage costs and thresholds afterwards from the panel, without us.

3.

3

### Shipping labels and booking the carrier

Stage 3

Generating shipping labels one at a time or for a whole batch of orders, booking a pickup for a specific time, a manifest of parcels to sign off on. This is also where warehouse hardware comes in, if you have it: a label printer and a barcode scanner.

4.

4

### Statuses in both directions

Stage 4

The tracking number comes back to the order, and the status from the carrier goes out to the customer. This is the stage that most often breaks after go-live, because carriers rename statuses and the mapping stops matching. That's why it stays in configuration, not in code, and you can fix it without a developer.

5.

5

### Testing on real shipments

Stage 5

A test order runs the whole path: choosing a pickup point, the shipping label, dispatch, tracking and a return. We do this on each carrier separately, because the differences between them only show up at the last stage.

Other services

## What else we do on PrestaShop stores

A store is several layers at once: catalogue, technology, visibility and measurement. Carrier integrations touch one of them, and at JustIdea the same team runs all of them, so below are the neighbouring pages, in case the cause sits a floor further along.

## Check the ratings before you commission an integration

When a carrier integration stops working, you hear about it from customers, not from monitoring. So instead of promises about reliability, we show the ratings clients have given JustIdea on Google, Facebook and Clutch.

Certifications and partnerships

## Who's responsible for the label, tracking and shipment status

A carrier integration fails quietly: the label still gets generated, but the status to the customer stops arriving. Below are the statuses that give us support on the systems this information passes through.

### base. (BaseLinker)

BaseLinker, integration partnership

A large share of stores dispatch and track shipments through base. This integration partnership gives JustIdea access to documentation and platform support whenever a status stops coming back to the store.

### PrestaShop Expert ★★★

PrestaShop, agency programme

The other end of the same path is the store itself and its status mapping. The top tier of PrestaShop's agency programme means we see core changes in this area before a stable release.

Doubts before you commit

## Connecting PrestaShop to carriers: four things we hear

All four come from experience with an off-the-shelf module that printed a label and stopped there.

### „We already have a carrier module from the store's marketplace”

An off-the-shelf module prints a label. It doesn't know the store sells in three currencies, that some of the stock is oversized, or that a return needs to go to a different address than dispatch went from. Integration is the rules for choosing a carrier and handling returns, not just the printout.

### „The customer still calls asking where the parcel is”

They call when they don't get a status. After integration, the status from the carrier's system flows back to the order and to the customer's email with no support involved, and the tracking number shows in their account. Those calls are the first thing to drop.

### „We have base., why integrate the store too”

If shipping labels go through base., the store keeps pickup-point selection and status updates. We say that upfront, because duplicating that work makes no sense: some clients arrive with base. already set up and leave with a smaller scope than they'd planned.

### „The carrier will change its API and the integration will break”

It will, sooner or later, and that's the most common cause of failures after go-live. That's why we keep status mapping in configuration, not in code: once a status name changes, you fix it from the store panel, no developer needed. A new API version on the carrier's side is developer work, covered by a post-launch care hours pool or quoted separately before it starts. A fault in our own build is fixed under the contract's warranty.

FAQ

## Carrier integrations: questions before you decide

**### How much does integrating carriers with a store cost?**

We quote it individually, since cost rises with the number of carriers and the scope. Generating shipping labels alone is cheaper than full handling with a basket pickup point, statuses and a return label. On top of that come module licences, if we use off-the-shelf ones, and those renew yearly.

**### Which carriers do you integrate with the store?**

DPD, InPost, DHL, UPS, FedEx, GLS and Poczta Polska. You generate shipping labels from the store or from base., and the tracking number and statuses flow back to the order automatically. We connect a carrier outside this list if it offers an API.

**### Will the customer get automatic shipment notifications?**

Yes. We map statuses from the carrier's API to order statuses and to messages to the customer, so nobody sends a tracking number by hand.

**### We already have base., do we still need a carrier integration?**

Usually not the full scope, since base. handles shipping labels. What's left is passing shipping data from the store and getting statuses back, and that's cheaper than a separate integration with each carrier.

**### Do I need my own agreements with carriers for this?**

Yes, and that works in your favour: an agreement made directly with the carrier gets you your own rates and your own claims terms. We connect the store to the account you already have and configure the scope of services. Without your own agreement, shipping goes through a middleman, and then the rates aren't yours.

**### Can the customer pick a locker or pickup point from a map?**

Yes, choosing a pickup point sits directly in the basket, with a map and postcode search. This is the part of the integration that affects conversion: a failed pickup-point selection is one of the more common reasons for basket abandonment at the last step.

**### How are returns and return labels handled?**

A return label runs the opposite direction from dispatch: the customer requests a return and gets a ready-made label straight away, with no contact with support. The return's tracking number comes back to the order, so you can see what stage the parcel heading back to the warehouse is at.
