# GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): visibility in AI search

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting AI-based search engines, such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity, to cite your site in the answer users get instead of a list of links. It has nothing to do with geotargeting or local SEO. If your brand is missing from those answers, customers make their decision without ever seeing your site, and a high ranking in the results does not change that.

**

The name is new, the work only partly

The name comes from a 2023 research paper and the market still uses it in its own way. Underneath sits a mix of SEO, structured data and work on what others write about your brand.

**

A model cites a passage, not a page

That changes the unit of work. An answer is built from pieces of text, so we edit single paragraphs until each one can be quoted on its own, without the rest of the page.

The problem

## Why does a brand vanish from AI answers when its site ranks high on Google?

A model does not pick ten results for you to compare. It writes one answer and names a few brands in it. Below are three reasons brands drop off that list even though they do well in classic search results.

**

### There is nothing to quote

A model quotes a sentence, not a page. Text broken into keywords on tiles and images without descriptions give it no passage it could paste into an answer.

**

### The site does not answer questions

People ask models in full sentences, not keywords. A site built around keywords does not cover the questions people actually ask.

**

### The brand is not an entity

Without consistent company data across the web, it is harder to treat two mentions as one company, and the answer goes to a competitor that is described more consistently.

Why now

## Why has AI visibility become a marketing priority?

AI-generated answers take clicks away from classic results and, at the same time, cite pages from outside the top ten more and more often. Three figures from two independent measurements, one Polish and one global.

29%

of queries in Polish Google end with an AI Overviews answer, and the share grows by a fifth quarter on quarter

-20%

of clicks is what a typical Polish domain loses on queries where an AI answer appeared

38%

is all that remains of pages cited in AI Overviews that rank in the top 10. In July 2025 it was 76 percent, the rest of citations now come from beyond page one

Definition

### What is GEO, and what is it definitely not?

**Generative engine optimization is** a method of optimising content for AI-based search engines. It covers work on your content, your brand and your online presence, so that they show up in answers generated by Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini. The term comes from a 2023 study by researchers from Princeton, Georgia Tech, the Allen Institute for AI and IIT Delhi, who described GEO as a way to improve the visibility of content in generative search engines. In practice it means your content is cited as a source, your brand is named in recommendations, and your products and services appear in answers to buyers' questions.

It is not geotargeting or geolocation

The abbreviation sounds like the "geo" in geography, and some searches for a "geo agency" are about a different trade altogether. Here it means generative engines only.

It is not local SEO

Work on a business profile and keywords with a city name is local SEO. GEO gets confused with it because of the abbreviation, but it covers something else and is measured differently.

It extends SEO, it does not replace it

A page that search crawlers cannot see is invisible to a model as well. SEO stays the foundation, and the differences start one floor up.

GEO vs SEO

## GEO vs SEO: how does optimising for AI differ from traditional SEO?

GEO and SEO, or search engine optimisation, are not rivals. They are two different goals on the same results screen. The table below shows where those goals split and where they overlap. One thing does not follow from it, so we say it plainly: a clear content structure, expertise and original data lift classic SEO at the same time, while the reverse is not always true.

GEO vs SEO: how does optimising for AI differ from traditional SEO?

| Element | SEO (traditional) | GEO |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Goal | A high position in classic search results | Citations and mentions in AI answers |
| Answer format | A list of links to websites | A synthesis of information from many sources |
| Query style | Short keywords | Conversational questions and prompts |
| Measure of success | Rankings, organic traffic, CTR | Citations, AI share of voice, traffic from AI tools |
| What we optimise | The page, for the search algorithm | Content, for AI models and generative engines |
| The click | The user lands on the page from the results | Often an answer with no click (zero-click) |
| Quality signals | Links, domain authority | E-E-A-T, citability, expertise, freshness |

How it works

## How do generative search engines work?

A classic search engine returns a list of links, the search results. A generative engine, such as Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot or Gemini, synthesises an answer in three steps (Retrieval-Augmented Generation, RAG). For optimisation this means one thing: you are not fighting for a single spot in a ranking, but for your passage to be precise and useful enough for the model to pick it up and use it.

### 1. Retrieval

The system searches the search engine index or the web for sources that match the user's query. A page the crawler cannot see drops out at this stage already.

### 2. Selection

The engine picks passages that match the intent of the question. Compact, unambiguous text wins: text that can be pasted into an answer without cutting it or adding context.

### 3. Generation

A large language model (LLM) assembles one answer from the selected passages. At this stage the system often cites its sources, with a link or just the brand name.

The method

## What GEO does differently from SEO

Four differences that actually change the way we work. The rest of the scope overlaps with SEO, which is why we run both as one job.

### The unit of work is a passage, not a page

A model takes a piece of text into its answer, not a whole page. So we edit paragraph by paragraph: the question in the heading, the answer in the first two sentences under it, with no references to what stands next to it. In SEO the whole page counted, here every paragraph counts on its own.

### The measure is share of answers, not position

There is no list of ten results, so there is nothing to number. We ask models a fixed set of questions, count how often your brand comes up and next to whom, and repeat the same measurement every week. We report the reading once a month, because a shorter window shows mostly noise.

### Half the work happens off your site

When asked to choose a supplier, a model reaches for sources that are nobody's advertising: discussions, comparisons, round-ups. In classic SEO this part was link building, here it is presence in content that others write.

### A consistent company entity, not just keywords

The model has to recognise that all the mentions are about one company. One name, one address, one scope of services in structured data and in directories. When sources say different things, the answer gets whichever version the model came across, and you fix that at the source, not on your site.

Scope of work

## GEO strategy: what exactly do we optimise?

GEO is not one technique but six areas that have to work together: without well-organised content there is nothing to quote, and without consistent company data the model does not know who it is quoting. Below is each area and what we do in it.

### Content and its structure

A model does not read a page the way a person does: it splits it into passages and uses the ones that match the question. So every section opens with a concrete answer, headings follow a logical hierarchy, and definitions, tables, lists and FAQs answer questions asked in full sentences, not just keywords.

### Expertise and E-E-A-T

Google's guidelines on helpful, people-first content describe the same signals we look after for models, so one piece of work counts in both places. In practice: signed articles with an author bio, original data and benchmarks, cited sources, update dates and deep coverage of a topic instead of shallow texts for every keyword.

### Structured data and technical basics

A model will not cite a page its crawler cannot fetch. The foundation: Schema.org for articles, FAQs, products, authors and organisations, a correct robots.txt and XML sitemap, Core Web Vitals and the mobile version. On top of that we add an llms.txt file, which organises what the model sees first; it is not an official standard and does not earn citations on its own.

### The brand as an entity

A model names a brand it can link unambiguously to a topic, a product and specific people. We build that through consistent company data across the web, presence in the Google Knowledge Graph, digital PR and mentions in trade media, reports and interviews.

### Optimising for conversational queries

People ask AI differently from classic search: instead of "seo agency london" they type "which SEO agency in London is best at e-commerce?". Content has to answer detailed, contextual questions with a clear intent, so its structure changes, not its substance.

### Link building for AI

In GEO links still count, but where they come from counts more. Measurement shows which sites models in your category really cite, and that is where we aim link building: expert portals, trade sites and media that already appear in those answers.

How we work

## What does GEO work with JustIdea look like? Step by step

The order follows what brings results fastest. Writing new content comes only third, and that is deliberate: first measurement, then gaps, and only then text.

1.

1

### AI visibility audit and a test query set

3-4 weeks

We check how your brand appears, or does not, in answers from Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. We build a set of questions your customers ask and use it to take a baseline: how often you come up, how often competitors do, which sources are cited and what in those answers is untrue.

2.

2

### Topical gap map

2 weeks

We check whether your content covers the topic well enough for the domain to count as an authority in its field. The result is a list of gaps with the reason each one weakens citability.

3.

3

### GEO content optimisation and structured data

ongoing

We optimise existing content and create new content for structure and citability: customer questions as headings, answers in the first sentences, figures with a source, Schema.org, a consistent company entity and an llms.txt file pointing models to your key content.

4.

4

### Building brand authority as an entity

ongoing

We strengthen the brand as a recognisable entity: digital PR, author profiles, mentions in trusted external sources and consistent company information across the web, because half of GEO work happens off your site.

5.

5

### Monitoring, reporting and iteration

ongoing

We ask the engines the same set of questions every week, because one answer is not a measurement. You get a report once a month: share of answers, citations, traffic from AI tools and recommendations for the next period. Without that comparison nobody can say whether anything has changed.

Measuring results

## How do we measure GEO results?

Classic SEO metrics, rankings and clicks, are not enough. In GEO we use a separate set of indicators and add Google Search Console data to the monitoring, to track changes in CTR and traffic on queries where AI answers appear.

How do we measure GEO results?

| Metric | What it measures |
| --- | --- |
| AI share of voice | The brand's share of AI answers against competitors for key queries |
| Citation frequency | How often the domain is cited in generative answers |
| AI referral traffic | Site traffic from AI tools (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com) |
| Brand mention monitoring | Brand mentions in AI answers, with and without a link |
| AI Overviews visibility | Presence in Google AI Overviews for the test query set |
| AI traffic quality | Conversion rate of users arriving from AI tools |

In numbers

## We measure it on ourselves, every week, in five engines

You cannot sell GEO with a screenshot of one chat with a model, because the next answer will be different. What you can do is measure a brand's share of answers to a fixed set of questions, week after week, and compare it over time. We have been doing that on our own brand since August 2026: seven Polish buying questions about agencies, five engines, the same measurement every week. Below are our figures from the first month.

29%

of model answers to seven questions about agencies named JustIdea in the first month of measurement, across five engines combined

24%

of Google AI Overviews answers to these questions name JustIdea, roughly one in four

21%

of ChatGPT answers to the same questions name JustIdea, roughly one in five

Certifications and partnerships

## GEO: what these partner statuses give you

The discipline has no certificates or exams, because it is too young for anyone to have set them up. So we list what we actually have and say what it is useful for.

### Google Premier Partner

Google, top tier of the Google Partners programme

Generative answers in Google are built from the live search index, so a change on your site shows up there sooner than in the model's own memory. Partner status gives earlier access to information about changes in the results and a route to ask when the search engine stops behaving the way it is publicly described.

### Microsoft Advertising Elite Partner

Microsoft, partner programme of the advertising platform

The second index, Microsoft's, powers Copilot and the searches ChatGPT runs while answering. We check it separately, and partner status gives access to tools that show how this index sees your site.

### Meta Business Partner

Meta, partner programme for Facebook and Instagram

Some of the sources models use to form a picture of a brand are social profiles and the discussions under them. Tidying up those profiles is part of the work on a consistent company entity, and partner status shortens the route when data has to be corrected at the source.

Doubts before we start

## GEO: four things we often hear

### „It is just a new name for SEO”

Largely yes, and we say so plainly instead of pretending it is a new discipline. There are four differences and we listed them above. If a provider cannot name them, they are selling you an old service under a new label.

### „The name is so new, I will wait”

You can wait for the name, not for the shift. Check in Search Console whether impressions are rising while clicks stay flat. If they are, the change has already happened to you, whatever we end up calling it a year from now.

### „Nobody can measure this”

You can, just differently from rankings. A fixed set of questions, repeated every week, and a number showing how often you come up and how often your competitors do. Every month without that measurement is a month without a baseline.

### „We have an SEO agency, they can do it”

Ideally they would, and we run both together ourselves. But ask your agency two specific things: which prompt set they will measure the effect on, and what will change in the first month without writing new pages.

Where this service ends

## How does GEO differ from SEO and from optimising for a single model?

Short answer

SEO fights for a place on the results list, GEO for the model citing your site in the answer above that list. GEO is not a fifth service next to AI SEO, ChatGPT, Gemini and the AI Overview audit either: it is the same visibility in models, described from the side of the method and what we change on the site.

This is one job described from five angles, and that is how these pages should be read. AI SEO is the same work named the way the market asks for it, and sold as a monthly retainer together with SEO. The AI Overview audit is a one-off measurement of Google alone, and the ChatGPT and Gemini pages each take one engine. This page describes the method, covers all generative engines at once, and its price list holds fixed-term projects, not a monthly fee.

Two things need saying plainly, because this whole category tempts people to make promises. Google's documentation has no tag that gets you into the answer, and what a model finds worth citing is decided by the same guidelines on helpful, people-first content. We are not selling a technical trick here.

### This is the service

- You want to change what is on your site and in its structured data.
- You care about all engines at once, not just one.
- You need an answer that can be quoted in a single paragraph.
- You want a weekly measurement of whether it has started being cited.

### That is different work

- You want to know where you stand first: that is a one-off AI Overview audit.
- You care about one model: those are separate pages on ChatGPT and Gemini.
- You prefer a monthly fee and one share report: that is AI SEO.
- You are fighting for a position on the results list: that is classic SEO.

How we price

## How much does GEO cost?

Three fixed-scope products, from the cheapest, each with a deadline and a written result. The visibility measurement that starts the process sits in the widest of them; a narrower version, for Google alone, is sold as the AI Overview audit. Ongoing work on citability is a retainer and runs together with SEO, because it is largely the same work; its price range is in the SEO price list.

FAQ

## GEO: questions before you decide

**### What is GEO in marketing?**

GEO stands for generative engine optimization, that is optimising for search engines built on language models. The aim is for a model to name your brand and cite your site in the answer it writes instead of a list of links. The name comes from a 2023 research paper. In marketing it is sometimes confused with geotargeting and local SEO, but it has nothing to do with either.

**### How does GEO differ from SEO?**

In four ways. The unit of work is a passage of text, not a whole page, because a model quotes a piece. The measure is share of answers, not position, because there is no list to number. About half the work happens off your site, in sources other people write, and what counts is a consistent company entity, not just keywords. The rest of the scope is shared with SEO, which is why the two are run together.

**### Will GEO replace SEO?**

No. Google still dominates search and classic organic results still bring most of the traffic, so GEO extends a visibility strategy rather than replacing SEO. A page search crawlers cannot see is invisible to a model as well. Companies that drop SEO for GEO make a mistake, and so do those that stick to classic SEO alone.

**### How do I choose a GEO agency?**

Ask any provider two things: which set of questions they will measure the effect on, and whether you will get that set in writing. Without a repeatable measurement there will be nothing to compare after three months, and in a discipline without certificates it is the only test that means anything. JustIdea Agency, based in Kraków, Poland, runs brand visibility in AI models with its own price list, although day to day it goes together with SEO, because it is largely the same work.

**### How much does GEO cost?**

The cheapest step, deploying an llms.txt file that points models to your key content, starts from €130 net. The topical gap map and the audit combining classic SEO with visibility in models are quoted to the size of your site. Ongoing work on citability is a retainer and usually runs together with SEO, because it largely consists of the same work. On a small budget we start with the cheapest things: tidying up company data, rewriting key paragraphs and the file for models.

**### How soon do GEO results show?**

The part of the answer a model builds from live search reacts fastest, because it draws on the search engine index, and there changes show within weeks. The model's own memory changes more slowly and is counted in quarters rather than weeks, because it updates with new model versions. Fixing untrue facts about your company takes the least time, because it is work on structured data and external sources. The first changes in citations usually show after a few months of steady work.

**### Which AI systems matter most in a GEO strategy?**

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode usually come first, because Google holds the dominant share of search, in Poland and in most European markets, and its generative answers react to changes on a site fastest. In parallel we optimise for ChatGPT Search and Perplexity, which are growing especially in B2B, and for Gemini and Copilot. We set the order by where your industry's customers actually ask, and we measure each engine separately.

**### Does GEO apply to Google and Bing, or only to ChatGPT?**

To all of them, because each of these engines generates its answer from a live search index. In Google these are AI Overviews and AI Mode, in Bing it is Copilot, and ChatGPT and Perplexity draw on both indexes. To get into the pool of sources you have to be in the Google and Bing indexes, but a top-ten position alone no longer decides whether you get cited, because models reach further. So an SEO specialist's job does not disappear because of generated answers, it gets a second goal.

**### What is an llms.txt file and is it worth having?**

An llms.txt file is a text file in the root directory of a site that tells language models which content is key and how to understand it, modelled on robots.txt for search crawlers. It is not an official Google standard and does not earn citations by itself, but it organises what the model sees first and costs little: with us, from €130 net to prepare and deploy. We have one on this site ourselves.

## GEO: what to know before you start

**

### Why GEO needs a different approach from classic SEO

Three differences affect every decision. First, there is no full transparency: classic SEO has documentation and historical data, while nobody has publicly described how AI systems choose their sources. What counts is systematic prompt monitoring and testing, not one-off actions. Second, volatility: the same prompt gives different results depending on the model, the time, the location and the wording, so stable visibility needs real topical authority. Third, hallucinations: generative systems can describe a brand wrongly or cite it in the wrong context, so GEO also covers monitoring the quality of mentions, not just their number.

**

### Why a passage, not a page

A model builds its answer from pieces of text that match the user's question, not from whole documents. In practice the advantage goes to a paragraph with the question in the heading and the answer in the first two sentences under it, even if the neighbouring page is better as a whole. The same format lifts classic SEO, because Google has been looking for exactly this since it introduced featured snippets.

**

### What GEO will not fix

It will not change a model's opinion of your brand, because that comes from what others write, and you work on it as long as you work on reputation. Nor can you delete false information from a model: you can cut off its source and supply the correct version where the model looks, then wait until it stops coming back. Anyone promising either within a month is promising something they do not control. It will not work on a site whose content only appears after scripts run either: the model's bot sees a skeleton, so the foundation has to be fixed first, a site that delivers its full content in the server's first response.

**

### What it looks like for a small business

The narrower the category, the easier it is to be cited in it, because the model has fewer candidates to name. A small company with a clearly described specialism is often better placed than a big one with a general description of everything, and this is the one place where the discipline can be kinder to smaller players than classic SEO.

**

### SEO, SGE and GEO: three abbreviations, one shift

SEO, or search engine optimisation, means optimising for classic search results and has rested on the same principles for twenty years. SGE, or Search Generative Experience, was the name of Google's 2023 experiment with generative AI in the results, which grew into today's AI Overviews. GEO means optimising for generative search engines: it covers all engines at once and concerns AI-generated content, not a list of links. Good SEO strategies do not lose from this shift, because the same signals that earn rankings also earn citations.

**

### GEO for companies in Poland and abroad

Our office is in Kraków, and visibility in AI models is by nature independent of location, so we work with companies from all over Poland and from foreign markets. Language does matter, though: a model answers a question asked in Polish differently from one asked in English, so the measurement question set is built separately for each market where you want to be named.
