# Product feed optimization for Google Shopping and Meta

A product disappears from ads or shows with an old price, and the cause almost always lies outside the campaign dashboard: in the product feed. The same file is read by Google Shopping, product campaigns in Google Ads, the Meta catalogue, the TikTok catalogue and Criteo, so one gap in the product attributes costs you in four channels at once. We tidy this file and maintain it, instead of patching the effects separately in each dashboard.

The feed stays yours

We work on your Google Merchant Center and your catalogue. The rules and documentation stay with you, also after the work ends.

**

Results, not a fix report

The effect shows in product campaigns: the cost per order before and after the feed fixes, not the number of errors fixed.

Starting point

## Why Google Shopping product campaigns cost more than they should

Three gaps in the catalogue that raise the cost of every product channel.

**

### Titles copied from the product page

A trade name nobody types into a search engine cuts the product out of part of the queries. It is often the cheapest fix in the whole account and the one most often skipped.

**

### Gaps in product attributes

An empty GTIN, brand, category or size cuts the product off from part of the ad inventory, and sometimes blocks its approval in Merchant Center.

**

### Price and availability with a delay

When stock and prices change during the day, a feed sent once a day advertises products that are already out of stock and prices from before the sale. You then pay for clicks that end in disappointment.

Definition

### What is a product feed and how does it get into Google Merchant Center?

**A product feed is** a file with data about your products: title, description, price, availability, images and attributes. Product campaigns build their ads from it. Google Merchant Center is where this file lands on Google's side and where Google Ads campaigns read it from, but the same catalogue also feeds Meta, TikTok and programmatic networks. That is why product feed optimization reaches further than changing settings in one dashboard.

One file, many channels

The same catalogue feeds Google Shopping, Meta, TikTok and Criteo. One fix works in all of them at once.

The title instead of a keyword

In product campaigns you do not set keywords. The title and product attributes decide whether a product matches a query.

Up-to-date price and stock

Price and availability should update as often as they change in the shop, otherwise you pay for traffic to products that are not there.

How it works step by step

## From a catalogue audit to product titles and attributes in the feed

Four stages. After the first you know how many products do not reach ads at all, and why.

1.

1

### Catalogue audit

1 week

We check disapprovals in Merchant Center, missing attributes, title quality and how often price and stock update. The result is a list of fixes ordered by priority.

2.

2

### Setup and rules

1-2 weeks

Merchant Center, data transformation rules and export to the other channels. One source, several recipients.

3.

3

### Work on titles and attributes

2-4 weeks

Titles built around real queries, completed product attributes, correct categorisation. Changes go in batches, so the effect can be traced to its cause.

4.

4

### Maintenance

ongoing work

We keep an eye on disapprovals and changes in platform requirements. The catalogue changes along with the shop, so this is not a one-off job.

Client reviews

## Ratings of the agency you trust with your product data

The feed works in the background until the day product campaigns stop. Trust in the contractor weighs more here than a list of features, so below are the ratings clients have given JustIdea on three platforms.

Certificates and partnerships

## Our own CSS comparison service in Google Shopping and support on Google's side

The product feed sits between the shop catalogue and several platforms, and each reads it a little differently. Below is what JustIdea has along that road, from the catalogue to the advertising platforms.

### Google Premier Partner

Google, top tier of the Google Partners programme

Beyond partner status, we have our own CSS comparison service, which usually makes product ads in the auction cost less per click than going through Google Shopping directly. It is not a dashboard setting, but a separate entity in the Comparison Shopping Services programme.

### base. (BaseLinker)

BaseLinker, integration partnership

The feed is built from the catalogue and stock levels, not from a spreadsheet. We build base. integrations in our e-commerce team, so we know the layer where the feed most often breaks, from the inside.

### Allegro Ads Partner

Allegro, advertising partner

The same catalogue also goes to Allegro, only with different data requirements: titles and listing parameters there are built for Allegro's own search engine, not Google's.

### Meta Business Partner

Meta, programme for advertising agencies

The Meta product catalogue reads the same feed differently from Google. We run Meta campaigns every day, so we handle the differences between the two catalogues' requirements with rules in a single feed, instead of fixing each channel by hand.

Doubts before we start

## Four things we hear about product feed optimization

Each sounds reasonable, and we have an answer to each one before we change the first title in the feed.

### „A plugin generates the feed, why separate work”

The plugin sends what it has in the database: a title copied from the product page, empty colour and size attributes, a price from before the sale. Work on the product feed means rules that rewrite titles for queries and complete product attributes, and making sure price and availability match to the hour.

### „The feed is a one-off setup”

The catalogue changes every week, and Merchant Center disapproves products silently. A feed without care loses products, and you only see it when product campaigns start costing more.

### „We have several thousand products, that cannot be handled by hand”

And it is not done by hand. We build titles and attributes with rules per category, not per product, so the same set of rules handles a hundred items and ten thousand. By hand we only fix what a rule let through.

### „Sales from product campaigns will drop after the changes”

Changes go in batches, on a separate part of the catalogue, comparing cost per click and revenue before and after. If a batch worsens the result, the previous version comes back. The feed is yours and you can take it to another contractor at any time.

Limits of the service

## When is feed optimization separate work, and when is it part of product campaigns?

Short answer

Separate work makes sense when another agency or your own team runs the campaigns, and Merchant Center disapproves products and pushes up the cost per click. When we run your product campaigns under the Basic package or above, the feed is within the scope of ongoing management and you do not pay for it twice.

The feed is yours: we set up the rules and the Merchant Center account in your company's name, so you can take it to another contractor at any time.

![The feed between the shop and the campaigns: separate work when someone else runs the campaigns, within the package when we run them](https://justidea.agency/assets/ill-reklama-google-ads-marza-w-feedzie.svg)

### This is the service

- Merchant Center disapproves products, and nobody knows how many or why.
- Another agency or your team runs the campaigns, and the feed sits between them.
- You have several thousand products and want rules instead of manual fixes.

### Start with something else

- We run your shopping campaigns under the Basic package or above: the feed is within ongoing management.
- The problem is stock and prices in the shop, not in the feed: that is the base. integration.
- You want product ads on Allegro, not on Google: that is Allegro Ads.

Pricing

## How much does product feed optimization cost

Setup is one-off, and ongoing feed management is part of the performance package from the Basic level upwards. If we run your product campaigns under that package, the feed is part of that work, not a separate invoice.

FAQ

## Product feed optimization: questions before you decide

**### Is this the same as Google Merchant Center?**

No. Merchant Center is the Google tool where your catalogue lands and where product campaigns in Google Ads take their data from. The product feed is the data itself, and it also feeds the Meta catalogue, the TikTok ads catalogue and programmatic networks. That is why we work on the data, not in one dashboard: a change in the catalogue reaches every channel that reads it.

**### How much does it cost?**

Setup starts from €250 net, one-off, and depends on the number of platforms. Ongoing feed management is part of the performance package from the Basic level, which we quote for your scope, with a three-month notice period, and we do not invoice it separately if we run your campaigns. For ad budgets above €10k, we quote individually.

**### We have a plugin that generates the feed. Is that enough?**

For approval in Merchant Center, usually yes. For a good result, rarely. The plugin copies data from the product page, and a product campaign needs titles built around queries and completed product attributes. You can see that difference directly in the cost per order.

**### What if we have several thousand products?**

Then it is even more worthwhile, because fixes are not made by hand, but with rules. A data transformation rule set once works on the whole catalogue and on every new product that comes into the shop.

**### Does the feed stay mine?**

Yes. The feed is created on your side, in your shop or your Merchant Center account, and we get access to it. When the work ends, nothing needs transferring: rules, mappings and change history stay where they were. We do not build feeds in agency tools, because then half the configuration disappears along with the contract.

## Product feed elements and updates: what is worth knowing

**

### Why the feed weighs more than campaign settings

In product campaigns you do not set keywords: the title, product attributes and category decide which query a product shows for. An hour of work on the catalogue therefore changes the result more than an hour spent on bids, and the effect shows at the same time in Google Shopping, the Meta catalogue and the other product channels.

**

### The most common gaps that cost money

Titles copied from the trade name, empty GTIN and brand, wrong categorisation, missing variants and data updated once a day. Each of these gaps either cuts the product off from part of the ad inventory, or makes you pay for clicks on a product that is out of stock.

**

### How we measure the effect

Not by the number of errors fixed, but by the cost per order in product campaigns before and after the fixes. The feed is a means, not an end, so we judge it like any other work: by the change in the campaign result.

**

### What product feed optimization involves

Product feed optimization is work on the data from which Google, Meta and other platforms choose to whom, and for which query, to show a product. A standard export from an online shop sends the trade name and the description from the product page, while the customer types a brand, model, colour and size into the search engine. That is why we start with the title: we build it from the most important product information, in the order in which people search for it. A precise title gives ads better matched to intent, and that usually shows in CTR and cost per click.

**

### Updates, format and compliance with requirements

Before we start improving the feed, we check which products lose visibility through disapprovals and gaps, because the format has to pass Merchant Center and the requirements of every target platform. Automatic updates of price and availability more often than once a day protect against disapprovals and against paying for clicks on products that are no longer there. Only an optimised feed lets you optimise product campaigns, because the user sees in the ad the same thing they will see in the shop. Keywords do not work here as they do in search campaigns, so key attributes, category and GTIN decide which queries a product can show for. We generate the feed from the shop catalogue, from BaseLinker or from a data warehouse, depending on where the most complete data sits.

## What else can we do for you?

## Let's start with a catalogue audit: disapprovals, gaps and data consistency

A week of work is usually enough to show how many products are disapproved, how many have empty attributes and which titles cut you out of queries. This list is often the cheapest fix in the whole ad account.
