# UX audit: what it is, what it costs and which one you need

A UX audit, also called a usability audit, checks where users get lost on your website or online store and turns that into a list of fixes ordered by impact on sales. It costs from €860 net, the same for a store and for a company website. It is not an opinion on the look of the site and not a graphic design project. Below we answer the three questions people ask before ordering: what exactly we examine, what it costs and whether you need a store audit or a company website audit.

Order a UX audit What a UX audit costs

**

We study behaviour, not taste

Session recordings, click maps and the funnel in analytics. The conclusion comes from what people who have already landed on the site actually do, not from who likes which button.

**

Fixes ranked by impact on sales

The list starts with changes that take the fewest developer hours and unblock the most baskets. Not with the ones that look best in a screenshot.

When it is worth it

## Four signs that the problem lies in UX, not in traffic

If you recognise even two, the problem is not taste but money. Every month without this list costs you budget sent down a path that loses people at the same spot, while the study itself is a one-off from €860 net.

**

### Traffic grows, sales stand still

The clearest sign. Campaigns deliver people and the site loses them. Adding budget in this situation raises the cost of acquisition, not sales.

**

### High basket abandonment

Above seventy percent it is usually not the industry norm but a specific step where something jams. Most often it is delivery costs shown too late.

**

### Phones convert far worse than computers

If the gap is more than half, the cause is almost never that mobile customers are less keen to buy. The cause is how the form behaves on a phone.

**

### Before a site rebuild

The best moment, because the list of problems becomes the brief for the designer. Without it the new site repeats the old mistakes in a new look.

Definition

### What is a UX audit?

**A UX audit is** a study in which we check where users get lost, hesitate or give up, and write it down as a list of fixes ordered by impact on results. It rests on four things: session recordings, the funnel in analytics, a heuristic evaluation based on Nielsen's usability heuristics and a step-by-step walk through the path, known as a cognitive walkthrough. The reports JustIdea writes contain not a single sentence about colour schemes, because a colour scheme does not explain why someone abandoned their basket.

Recordings and behaviour maps

We watch how people really move around the site. A cursor circling over one spot for five seconds says more than an hour of debate about the layout.

The funnel in numbers

How many people reach the basket, how many reach payment and at which step the biggest share drops out. That one chart points to the screen you need to deal with first.

Cognitive walkthrough: the path step by step

A specialist goes through a purchase or an enquiry the way a customer would, on a phone and on a computer. They note every place where they had to guess something.

Phone and computer separately

Most traffic is mobile, and most designs are made on a large screen. The gap between those two views is the most common source of losses we see.

Which audit

## Store UX audit versus company website UX audit

The method is the same in both cases, only the subject of the study differs: there the basket, here the form. Below are five things that actually change what goes into the report.

Store UX audit versus company website UX audit

| Issue | Online store | Company website |
| --- | --- | --- |
| User's goal | Buy and pay | Understand the offer and enquire |
| Main subject of the study | Listing, product page, basket, payment | Path to the form and sales content |
| Key number | Basket abandonment and conversion | Enquiries per session |
| Typical number of templates | A dozen or so, plus edge cases | A few |
| Typical duration | About 10 working days | The same, we confirm the date after the brief |

Choose your audit

## Which UX audit to order, and when to order something else

The first two audits are the same work on two different paths, at the same price. The next two services are what we recommend instead of a usability audit when the conversation shows that the problem lies elsewhere.

[### Online store UX audit

Listing, filters, product page, basket and payment. Choose it when baskets fill up but there are fewer orders than the numbers suggest.

View ›](https://justidea.agency/en/services/e-commerce/ecommerce-ux-audit/) [### Website UX audit

The path from entry to enquiry, clarity of the offer, forms and the mobile version. Choose it when traffic grows and the form stays silent.

View ›](https://justidea.agency/en/services/websites/website-ux-audit/) [### Speed optimisation

When the recordings show people leaving before the page has loaded. Then technology will help faster than a change of layout.

View ›](https://justidea.agency/en/services/e-commerce/online-stores-speed-optimization/) [### SEO audit

When the problem is not how users behave but that there are too few of them. A usability study without traffic has nothing to work on.

How it works step by step

## From a business question to a list of fixes

Three stages in about ten working days. None of them starts with an opinion on the look, and the last one ends with a document that stays with you.

1.

1

### Interview and choice of paths

a few days

We agree which path is to be studied and what success means here. Auditing the whole site at once produces a list no one implements.

2.

2

### Analysis of data and recordings

1 week

The analytics funnel, session recordings, click maps and a heuristic review. We look for the places where people stop or turn back, not for what we happen to dislike.

3.

3

### Report and walkthrough

a few days

Fixes ranked by impact on sales and by implementation cost, each backed by data. The material stays with you and can be handed to any contractor.

Limits of the service

## When does a UX audit make sense and when is it premature?

Short answer

A UX audit makes sense from the moment people are already on the site and leave a trail behind them. It needs two things: traffic and session recordings that show where people stop. With zero traffic there is nothing to read, and we say so plainly instead of issuing an invoice.

The outcome is a report with a list of fixes, not a new layout. If the study leads to a decision to redesign, that is separate work with a separate quote, and the report becomes its brief rather than replacing it.

Three different jobs sit side by side on any site, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying. An SEO audit asks whether people come at all. A UX audit asks what the people who have already come are doing. Web analytics asks whether the numbers we read all this from are telling the truth, and it is the precondition for the other two. The JustIdea team starts with whichever job is blocking the rest in your case, even if you are asking about another.

![A customer path axis with the threshold of entering the site: before the threshold search and campaigns do the work, after it a UX audit has recordings and data to read](https://justidea.agency/assets/ill-audyt-ux-kiedy-ma-sens.svg)

### A UX audit makes sense

- You have traffic and data from tools, meaning session recordings and click maps.
- You can see that the basket or form is losing people, but not at which step.
- You want a list of fixes to implement, not a new graphic design.

### Not the right moment yet

- Traffic is zero: without recordings and data there is nothing to read, so search or a campaign comes first.
- You are after a new layout: a redesign is separate work with a separate quote, and the audit gives it a foundation.
- You want usability testing with real users: moderated tests with recruitment are more expensive and slower, and we recommend them only for large rebuilds.

Certifications and partnerships

## Who runs the audit: a UX specialist, not a tool

A study is as good as the specialist watching the recordings. Below is what we can show in this field beyond our own opinion of ourselves.

### PrestaShop Expert ★★★

PrestaShop, agency programme

The top tier of the agency programme. For a store it means we know which behaviour is the platform default and which someone changed on purpose, and which fix requires changes to the theme.

### Google Premier Partner

Google, top tier of the Google Partners programme

Access to behaviour data from campaigns and to analytics on the advertising side. It lets us compare how a user from an ad differs from one from search, because they get lost in different places.

### HubSpot Certified Partner

HubSpot, partner programme

On a company website everything comes down to the form and to what happens to the enquiry next. Working on the sales system lets us check not only the number of enquiries but also their quality.

Doubts before working together

## UX audit: three things we hear

### „We have a good designer, it looks great”

Probably so, and that is not what we study. We check usability, not aesthetics: how many people reach the end of the path and what the conversion rate is. The best-looking sites can have the worst baskets, because the designer decides the look, while the path depends on how many times you have to guess something.

### „We know what is wrong, we just have no time”

Then the report gives you not a diagnosis but an order and an argument. A list ranked by impact on sales is what wins developer hours, because every item shows what postponing it costs.

### „That sounds expensive”

From €860 net, one-off, and that amount is on this page, not in a quote after the call. It is usually less than a month of running the campaign you are sending down that same path.

Pricing

## How much does a UX audit cost

Both services start from the same price, because it is the same work done on a different subject, not two different services. The price is stated here before we talk, not after.

Company websites

### Website UX audit

The path from entry to sending an enquiry, clarity of the offer, forms and the mobile version. For company and service websites where the user's goal is to understand the offer and get in touch.

FAQ

## UX audit: questions before you decide

**### What is a UX audit?**

It is a study of user experience in which we check where people get lost, hesitate or give up, and write it down as a list of fixes ordered by impact on results. It relies on session recordings, analytics data and walking the path step by step, separately on a phone and on a computer. It is not an assessment of the look of the site and not a graphic design project.

**### How much does a UX audit cost?**

From €860 net, the same for a store and for a company website. The price is stated on this page before we talk. For comparison: it is usually less than a month of running a campaign.

**### How does a UX audit differ from an SEO audit and from analytics?**

An SEO audit asks why people do not find the site. A usability study begins at the moment they are already on it and asks why they leave without buying. Web analytics is the precondition for both: without correct measurement the funnel shows numbers that must not be read. With zero traffic we say plainly that it is time for search or a campaign, instead of taking the job.

**### What does a UX audit involve and how does it run?**

Three stages, with four activities in the middle. The first stage is an interview: we agree which path is to be studied and what success means here. The second is the study itself, meaning funnel analysis in analytics, a review of session recordings, a cognitive walkthrough and a heuristic evaluation of the key views. A cognitive walkthrough is going through the path as a customer would, separately on a phone and on a computer, and a heuristic evaluation is a checklist based on Nielsen's heuristics. The third stage is a report with a list of recommendations, an assessment of impact and effort, and a one-hour walkthrough.

**### What errors does a UX audit find most often?**

The most common UX errors are boring, and that is exactly why they cost money. Delivery costs shown only in the basket, a contact form with twelve fields, error messages visible only after submitting. Add to that a button hidden under the cookie consent banner on a phone, and a first screen that talks about the company instead of answering the visitor's question. In the report we split them into critical errors that cut the path off, medium ones that lengthen it and basic ones that spoil the impression but do not stop the purchase.

**### How does an expert UX audit differ from usability testing?**

An expert audit works on data you already have and on a specialist walking the path, so it is shorter and cheaper. Usability testing means recruiting users and watching how they complete tasks on your site. We recommend it for large rebuilds, because it answers questions the data does not ask. For a typical website an expert study gives most of the same conclusions for a fraction of the cost of testing.

**### How long does a UX audit take?**

About ten working days from full access, the same for a store and for a company website. It stretches to four weeks when the site does not record sessions yet: we then add two weeks to gather material, because with too few sessions the conclusions would be guesswork.

**### Do you audit the UX of mobile apps?**

Yes, for store apps we build together with the store. The method for websites and apps is the same, the recording tool changes and screens appear that do not exist in a browser, such as biometric login or notifications. Apps outside e-commerce are quoted individually.

**### What do I get at the end of a UX audit?**

A document with a list of fixes ranked by impact on sales. Each item has a description of the problem, a screenshot, a proposed solution and a note on whether the content team or a developer will make the fix. Plus a one-hour walkthrough. The report is yours and you can implement it without us or hand it to any contractor.

**### Do you run UX audits for companies outside Poland?**

Yes, and it works the same way as for companies in Poland, because the study relies on data from your site and does not require anyone on the spot. Our office is in Kraków, and the results walkthrough takes place on a video call, or in person when that suits you better.

## UX audit: what to know before you order

**

### Why a study without traffic makes no sense

The method relies on what real users do. With a few dozen sessions a month the recordings do not form a pattern and every conclusion is a one-off case. It is then cheaper and more honest to start with visibility and leave usability for the moment when there is something to watch.

**

### UX audit cost versus the cost of implementing it

The document itself is usually the smaller part of the spend. The second and larger part is the developer hours needed for the fixes. That is why for each item we state the estimated effort and who will do it, so the implementation budget can be planned straight away rather than discovered after the fact.

**

### UX audit before a site redesign

This is the most cost-effective moment. The list of problems becomes the designer's brief and protects against the most common rebuild mistake: carrying old barriers over into a new look. Without that list a new site usually improves the look and leaves conversion where it was.

**

### UX audit from Kraków, done remotely

Our office is in Kraków, and we run the study on data from your site, so we deliver it remotely for companies across Poland and abroad. It is worth meeting live for the results walkthrough, especially when the person who will implement the fixes is at the table.

**

### What a UX audit covers: five areas and a score for each

UX, or user experience, is how a user experiences a website, store or app: whether they understand where they are, whether they find what they came for and whether the path to their goal puts up resistance. A website usability audit, also called a user experience audit, checks five areas: the first screen, navigation, the offer content, the form and the mobile version. Each area gets its own score. A UX analysis, meaning a usability analysis of the website, shows the strengths and weaknesses of each of these five areas and how they translate into sales. A site should be friendly not in general, but for the person who came to do a specific thing, and that is the measure we hold business goals against.

**

### Website and store UX audit: when it pays off

It is cheapest before the season and before a rebuild. Before the season because an error on the basket page is removed once, while the traffic that crashes into it you buy every month. Before a rebuild because the list of problems becomes the designer's brief instead of a complaint after handover. For online stores and websites with a few templates the study takes about ten working days, and implementing the recommendations can be spread over months, starting with the pages with the most traffic. It does not replace loading speed optimisation or designing new views: it says what to fix and leaves you a usability score for the site in numbers you can come back to after implementation.
