WordPress speed optimization: load time and PageSpeed Insights

A slow site costs you in two places at once: some people leave before reading the offer, and Google pushes the site further down the results. We measure load time on three types of page, show you what slows them down, and order the fixes by biggest gain first. So you know where to start before you spend a penny on the build.

Where we start

Load time creeps up for years and nobody knows why

WordPress speed optimization starts with a measurement, and only then come the fixes: until someone measures it, the bottleneck stays a matter of opinion. A site that takes 3 seconds to build on a phone loses part of its audience before it shows the first sentence of the offer. Three symptoms are visible with no tool at all.

The header image arrives last

The text is already there, and the main graphic is still loading. A visitor judges the page by whatever they see first, and what they see is an empty box.

It looks ready, but nothing responds to a click

The menu and the form react with a delay, because scripts are still running in the background. The visitor clicks a second time, and some give up before sending an enquiry.

It only slows down once campaign traffic arrives

A server that was enough for a handful of daily visits responds slower once you turn ads on. You then pay for clicks to a page some of them never wait to see.

Definition

What Core Web Vitals are, the basis of measuring load speed

Core Web Vitals are three metrics Google uses to describe how a page loads through a person's eyes, not a simulator's. The data comes from the browsers of people who actually visited the site, which is why Search Console only shows an improvement a few weeks after launch, and we say so before we start. The thresholds are public and the same for everyone, so a measurement tells you straight away how far your site is from green.

LCP, when the content becomes visible

The largest element on the first screen, usually the header image. Until it appears, the page looks empty, even though it is technically already loading.

INP, the response to a click

How long it takes from a click to the page reacting. Scripts running in the background at the same second are what usually breaks this.

CLS, the layout jumping around

Content that jumps while the page loads. Usually the fault of images with no set dimensions and a consent banner bolted on at the top.

Scope

WordPress speed optimization: what exactly we do

  • ✓ Baseline measurement: LCP, INP and CLS, taken separately for the home page, an offer page and a blog post
  • ✓ Server and configuration: response time, PHP version, page cache, compression
  • ✓ Plugin review, with the cost of every plugin in milliseconds and a list of which ones you can disable with no loss of function
  • ✓ Images and fonts: next-generation formats, dimensions set in the markup, lazy loading below the first screen
  • ✓ Third-party scripts: consent banner, chat and ad pixels, split into what we can move and what is your call
  • ✓ A second measurement under the same conditions, so the difference can be shown, not just claimed

What we measure it with

WordPress 6.x Core Web Vitals from the field (CrUX) PageSpeed Insights Google Search Console
Step by step

From speed test to a second measurement: four stages

The first stage is a paid analysis, and you can stop there: its result is a list of fixes, not a commitment to keep working with us. The other three only start once you come back for them.

  1. 1

    Baseline measurement

    5 working days

Three types of page, lab and field data. The result is a list of bottlenecks, each with an estimated gain in milliseconds.

  2. 2

    Cheap, fast fixes

    3-5 days

Images, fonts, script loading order and cache configuration. This is usually eighty per cent of the effect for twenty per cent of the work.

  3. 3

    Fixes that need a decision

    depends on scope

Disabling a plugin, changing hosting, rebuilding the header. We quote each one separately, because each touches something someone in the company relies on.

  4. 4

    Second measurement

    after 2-4 weeks

The same pages and the same tools, so the difference is comparable. Field data needs a few weeks to show the change, and we say so before we start.

Boundaries of this service

When speed optimisation is enough, and when a rebuild is needed

Short answer

Optimisation is enough when the site works correctly and is slow because of images, scripts and plugins. A rebuild makes sense when the theme and plugins are so old that every fix breaks something next to it. Which of the two applies comes out of the measurement, not a conversation before it.

The analysis ends with a list of fixes, each with an estimated effect and a build price. The list says what to change, not who has to do it, so you can implement it with us, with your own developer, or with whoever built the site.

The measurement decides: fixes to images, scripts and plugins, or a new site when the theme cannot be repaired

This is the right service

  • Core Web Vitals are red in Search Console.
  • The site takes several seconds to load on a phone, but it works.
  • Campaigns are getting more expensive because the landing page is slow.

Start with something else

  • The theme and plugins are so old that fixes break things nearby: that is a new site.
  • The site is fast and there are still no enquiries: that is a website SEO or UX audit.
  • It is about a store, not a website: that is store speed optimisation.

What else we can do for you

Speed is one layer of a site. Alongside it sits visibility in search, the template itself, and who maintains it afterwards. These are three related pages, each with its own scope and its own price.

Where the problem usually sits

Four causes of a slow-loading site that we see most often

A slow company site is rarely slow for just one reason, which is why the fix list always has several items. These are four that keep coming back in most of our analyses, ordered from cheapest to fix.

Images at their original size

A photo four thousand pixels wide, displayed in a thumbnail three hundred pixels across. With ten such images, a phone downloads several megabytes just to draw a screen the size of a hand.

Scripts loaded before the content

Analytics tools, chat, a map and a consent plugin loaded in the header, before the first sentence appears. Some we move without losing any tracking, and for the rest you decide what to give up.

A font that blocks rendering

The browser waits to show text until it has downloaded the font. It shows up as a blank page for the first few seconds, and is fixed by setting a fallback behaviour, not by changing the typeface.

A server that responds too slowly

Before anything can start rendering, the server has to respond. If it does that slowly, it is the ceiling for everything else, and no work in the browser will make up for it.

What we do not promise

A perfect score in PageSpeed Insights is not the goal of this work

A one-off lab test alongside field data gathered over weeks from three types of page: the home page, an offer page and a blog post

A PageSpeed Insights score is calculated for a single load under lab conditions, while a site meant to collect enquiries has to load an analytics tool, a consent plugin and usually a chat widget too. You can switch them off and get a perfect score, except then you have no idea where your enquiries are coming from.

That is why at JustIdea we work from field data, measurements from the browsers of people who actually visited the site. We measure the home page, an offer page and a blog post separately, because each one slows down for a different reason, and a single averaged figure for the whole site does not tell you where to fix anything.

Day by day

What you get on each of the five days of the analysis

This is the first stage from the section above, broken down by day. The process is fixed, and at the end you are left with a document you can take to any supplier.

  1. 1

    Baseline measurement

    Day 1

The home page, an offer page and a blog post, measured separately, in the lab and in the field. This is the reference point we come back to after the fixes, so we record the measurement conditions together with the result.

  2. 2

    Server and delivery layer

    Day 2

Response time, environment version and configuration, caching, compression, content delivery network. We also check whether the site only responds slowly on the first visit, a typical symptom of a badly configured cache.

  3. 3

    First-screen content

    Day 3

Images, fonts, styles and anything blocking the first view from rendering. This is where most of the cheap fixes turn up, because for years nobody checked what size images were being uploaded at.

  4. 4

    Scripts and third-party tools

    Day 4

Analytics, pixels, chat, a map, a consent plugin. We measure what each one costs, and split them into ones to move, ones to replace, and ones for a business decision. We do not make that last call for you.

  5. 5

A report with the list ordered by gain

    Day 5

Every item has the problem described, an estimated gain and an estimated effort, so it is clear what to do first. We split the tasks your own team can handle from the ones that need a developer.

Client reviews

You can measure speed yourself, reviews describe the working relationship

Work on speed does not show up in a portfolio. It shows up in how a supplier works over those few weeks, and what they leave behind. That is why, instead of describing ourselves, we show the whole agency's reviews.

4.96 / 5

weighted average of 224 reviews across three platforms. Clients gave them, and each site links to the profile with the full text of every review.

A company website's speed pays off in enquiries, not in points

A speed fix only matters once it shows up outside the measurement tool: in a campaign and in search. These are three statuses that give us access to data on that other side, so we show the effect in numbers we do not issue ourselves.

Top WordPress Developers Poland 2024

Clutch, WordPress developer ranking

Most of the company sites we speed up run on WordPress, and there the bottleneck usually has one of a handful of known causes. Clutch verifies every review with a call to its author, so the ranking is based on JustIdea builds a client actually accepted, not on our own claims.

Google Premier Partner

Google, top tier of the Google Partners programme

A slow landing page raises the cost per click and hurts the quality score of a campaign. The status gives JustIdea support on Google's side, so we can show the effect of a fix on campaign data, not only on a lab score.

Microsoft Advertising Elite Partner

Microsoft, highest tier of the programme

The same paid traffic also comes through Microsoft Advertising, and there a slow page costs exactly as much. The top tier of the programme gives us data on the platform's side, so we can see the drop-off in both channels separately.

Doubts before working together

What we hear in every conversation about website speed

Three things that keep coming up, and what is left of them after a measurement.

“My site opens instantly for me”

Usually because you have it cached in your browser and a better connection than half your visitors. So we look at field data instead: how long a first-time visitor waits, on a phone, coming from an ad.

“We already installed an optimisation plugin”

Cache plugins help and often stay in the final setup, but they will not fix images in the wrong format or scripts loading ahead of the content. Two of these plugins running together can actually slow a site down, and we see it regularly.

“Wouldn't it be simpler to rebuild the site from scratch?”

Sometimes it would, and then we say so. The line falls where the problem sits in the site's construction, not its configuration. The analysis settles that in 5 working days, and costs less than rebuilding the site from zero.

FAQ

Speed test and speed optimization: questions before you decide

How much does website speed optimization cost?

The analysis costs €740 net and takes 5 working days. We only quote the fixes after it, because until we know whether the bottleneck sits in the images, the plugins or the server, a quote would just be a guess. You can buy the analysis on its own and have your own team implement it.

How much faster will my site get?

We do not give that figure before the measurement, because it depends on what is slowing the site down today. WordPress speed optimization therefore starts with a list of fixes, each with an estimated gain in milliseconds. You decide what to implement based on those numbers, not on our promise.

Does site speed affect Google rankings?

Core Web Vitals are one of the signals Google uses to rank results, but not the only one and not the most important. The stronger effect shows up elsewhere: on a phone, some people leave before they see the offer, so the same traffic leaves fewer enquiries behind. We measure both separately and show them in one report.

Do I need to change hosting?

Sometimes, but that only comes out of the measurement and is never the first recommendation. We check the configuration, the cache and the PHP version first, because on most sites we look at, a correct setting gives more than a stronger machine. If the server really limits the result, we recommend changing it.

What about the consent banner and marketing scripts?

Those are usually the most expensive part, and they also have to stay. We check which scripts can load after the content, which can move to server-side tracking, and which nobody in the company uses any more even though they are still sitting on the site. You switch off that last group, not us.

When is optimisation not enough?

When the problem sits in the construction, not the configuration. If every page is only assembled at the moment someone visits, after querying a database and running a dozen plugins, that can be sped up, but it cannot be removed entirely. The same mechanism means a language model's bot gets a skeleton instead of content. In that case we suggest a rebuild, and we say so after the measurement, never before.

Page speed and website speed: four takeaways from our analyses

Speed and Google rankings

Core Web Vitals are one ranking signal and will not replace content or links. What matters more is how Google calculates them: from data gathered over weeks, and for low-traffic pages it scores them together with the rest of the site. A fix in one template lifts every page built on it, which is why we start with templates, not individual addresses.

Lab data versus field data

PageSpeed Insights shows two things at once: a one-off test under lab conditions, and data gathered from real users' browsers. After a fix goes live, the test changes the same day, and the Search Console chart a few weeks later. Whoever judges the effect from the test alone draws the conclusion too early, in either direction.

How much you can realistically gain

On the company sites we look at, the biggest single gains come from next-generation image formats, deferring third-party scripts and turning on page caching. These are cheap, fast fixes. Beyond that level, every further second costs more work, which is why the task list is ordered by gain against effort, and you can stop wherever you want on it.

Website performance and user experience

Website performance is not just a score in a tool. Load time decides whether a visitor sees the offer before deciding to leave, and the experience on a phone is one of the signals search results depend on. A speed test in PageSpeed Insights shows the state of a single load, which is why we never judge load speed on one test, only on field data. In practice, WordPress speed optimization makes the biggest felt difference first in images and scripts, and only afterwards on the server.
