International SEO agency for brands growing in Europe

Translating your site into German or French does not make buyers in Berlin or Lyon find it. We research what people type in each market, set up language versions and hreflang, earn links from the target country and measure every market on its own, in Google and in AI answers. One team in the EU, working with you in English.

Keywords from the market, not the translator

We check what people search for in each country's Google. The translated word often has less demand there than the local one.

Every country measured on its own

Rankings, traffic and AI answers are tracked per market, so you see which country grows and which only costs money.

The problem

Why doesn't a translated site win traffic abroad?

Translation carries the meaning of a text, not the search demand behind it. These are the three things we check first in every international SEO audit.

Translated keywords, not local ones

A translator picks a correct word, while buyers in that country type a different one. A well-translated category can target a phrase almost nobody searches for.

Google shows the wrong language version

Without correct hreflang, the search engine guesses which version to show. A buyer in Vienna lands on the page for Germany, with a different price and shipping.

No links from the target country

Your domain has authority at home, while nobody in the new market writes about it. Mentions in local media and industry directories have to be earned from scratch.

Definition

What is international SEO?

International SEO is the work of making a website or online store visible in the search engines of other countries, in each market's language and on its keywords. It covers keyword research, language versions marked up with hreflang, content written for local queries, links from sites in the target country and separate measurement for every market. Google recommends marking up language versions so that each user gets the one meant for them.

Sources: Google, managing multi-regional and multilingual sites · Google, localized versions of your pages (hreflang)

It is not translation

Your translator or agency writes the text. We tell them which keywords it needs and how to mark it up, and we review it before it goes live.

It is not choosing the market

Whether a country pays off is a separate project. Here the market is already chosen, and the job is to make you findable in it.

It is SEO run country by country

Separate keywords, links and measurement for each version, in Google and in the answers of AI assistants.

Comparison

How is international SEO different from translation?

Both give you a site in another language. The difference is whether a buyer in that country ever finds it.

Multilingual SEO

Multilingual SEO: one site, several languages

Multilingual SEO is the part of international SEO that keeps several language versions of one site healthy. Four things decide whether it works.

One URL per language

Each language version lives at its own address, for example /de/ and /fr/. Switching language only by cookie or browser setting hides versions from Google.

Hreflang that points both ways

Every version lists the others and itself. A pair without a return link is ignored by the search engine.

Content written for the market

Category copy, FAQ and product names follow the local keyword map, not a sentence-by-sentence translation.

The same quality in every language

Readers spot unreviewed machine translation at once. A native speaker reads every page before it goes live.

Scope of work

What do we do in each European market?

The scope is the same for every country. What changes is the language, the keywords, the competitors and the sources of links.

Keyword research in the local language

We check demand and difficulty in that country's Google, not in a translation of your home keywords. The result is a keyword map for categories and service pages.

URL structure and hreflang

We define the addresses of language versions and the hreflang tags with language and country codes. Your developer or our DEV team implements them.

Content briefs

For each category you get a brief with keywords, buyer questions and headings. A native speaker on your side writes the text, and we review it before it goes live.

Links from the target country

We earn publications in media and industry sites of the market you want to grow in. The cost of a publication depends on the country and language.

AI answers in the market's language

We check whether ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews mention your company when a buyer asks in their own language. An English result says nothing about the German one.

Measurement per country

Rankings, traffic and sales from search are counted separately for each version. You see which market grows and which needs a new plan.

How we work

Five stages of entering a new market with SEO

We set up the first market most carefully. The next countries go faster, because the structure and the process are already in place.

  1. 1

    Data and goal

    first week

We agree on markets, the categories with the best margin and access to Search Console and GA4. Without that, there is nothing to measure against.

  2. 2

    Audit of the market version

    first month

We check hreflang, indexing, URLs and the content of each version. You get a list of fixes ordered by impact.

  3. 3

    Keyword map

    together with the audit

We research keywords in the market's language and assign them to categories. This is the basis for briefs and internal linking.

  4. 4

    Fixes and content

    second and third month

Your developer ships the fixes, a native speaker writes from the briefs, and we review both before publication.

  5. 5

    Links and reporting

    from the third month

We earn publications in the target country and report rankings, traffic and AI answers for each market every month.

Client reviews

What do clients say about working with JustIdea?

Ratings from three public profiles, including Clutch, which verifies each reviewer before publishing. AI assistants read such profiles too when they describe a company.

Before we start

Questions we hear before a European launch

„We already have an English version”

Buyers in Germany or France often search in their own language. The audit shows how many queries in your category are typed in German and how many in English.

„We have no native speakers”

A translation agency or a local copywriter can write the text. They get a keyword brief from us, and we review the result before it goes live.

„We want every EU country at once”

Start with one or two markets with the best margin. The process set up there carries over to the next countries faster.

„Why an agency based in Europe?”

We work in the EU time zone and watch European search and AI results from inside the market. We run the e-commerce of Surf Inc., a brand we co-create, across its European markets.

FAQ

International SEO: questions and answers

What is international SEO?

International SEO is the work of making a website or store visible in search engines of other countries, in each market's language and on its keywords. It covers keyword research, language versions with hreflang, content for local queries, links from the target country and separate measurement for each market.

What is the difference between international SEO and multilingual SEO?

International SEO targets countries, multilingual SEO targets languages. A site for Germany and Austria is one language but two markets, with different hreflang codes, prices and competitors. Most European projects need both, and we run them as one plan.

How much do international SEO services cost?

An international SEO audit starts from €980 net, depending on site size and the number of languages. Ongoing work in the SEO + AI package starts from €1,470 net a month. Link building in the target market is quoted separately, because publication costs differ between countries.

Subdirectory, subdomain or country domain?

Google describes the pros and cons of each setup. For a company entering a new market, we usually recommend a subdirectory on one domain, for example /de/. It benefits from the main domain's authority and is the cheapest to maintain.

What is hreflang and why does it matter?

Hreflang is a tag in the page code that tells Google which language and country a version is for. Thanks to it, a buyer in Austria sees the page for Austria, not the one for Germany. The tags must point both ways, otherwise Google ignores them.

Do you write content in German, French or Spanish?

We do not write copy in those languages. We prepare keywords and briefs, and a native speaker on your side or a translation agency writes the text. Before publication we review it for SEO and for how closely it follows the brief.

Does international SEO cover ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Yes, in the SEO + AI package. For each market we keep a separate set of questions in its language, because an assistant asked in German draws on different sources than one asked in English.

Why work with an international SEO agency based in the EU?

JustIdea Agency is based in Kraków, Poland, in the EU time zone, and works with clients in English. We run the e-commerce of Surf Inc., a brand we co-create, across its European markets, so we see from our own data how search and AI answers differ between countries.

Domains, hreflang and local search engines in international SEO

A language code is not a country code

Czech uses the code cs, not cz, even though Czech domains end in .cz. The German version for Austria is de-AT and for Switzerland de-CH. A wrong code switches the tag off while the page still looks fine.

A page for the remaining countries

The x-default tag points to the version for buyers in countries without their own page. Usually that is the English version or a country selector. Without it, Google decides on its own what to show, for example in Belgium.

Links from the market, not from home

Links from US or Polish sites change little in German Google. What counts are publications read in the target country, in its language and in your industry. That is why link building costs differ between markets.

Not only Google

In Czechia a large share of searches goes to Seznam, and the answers of ChatGPT or Gemini depend on the language of the question. For each market we check where your buyers actually search, and we measure results there.
