Server-side tagging: tracking that does not lose orders

The store made a sale, but the order is missing from the ad platform. The budget then goes where conversions came back, not where people actually bought. Server-side tagging with Google Tag Manager moves measurement from the browser to your server and narrows that gap.

The server and the data stay yours

The container runs on your domain and your infrastructure. Access and documentation stay with you, even if we part ways.

The container is not left unattended

After launch someone has to keep an eye on changes to the site and to the platforms' APIs. You can take that from us as a maintenance package or leave it to your own team.

Starting point

Why is browser-based tracking no longer enough?

It is not an implementation error or the fault of one platform. This is simply how measurement set up in the browser works today, whoever configured it.

Blockers and privacy settings

Tracking scripts loaded in the browser are often blocked by ad blockers before they run. The order exists, the event does not.

Short-lived cookies

Under Intelligent Tracking Prevention, Safari deletes cookies set by script after 7 days, while selected Google cookies live for 180 days or a year. A return visit after that looks like new traffic, even though it is the same customer.

A campaign learning from a gap

The algorithm learns from what came back to it. A missing conversion does not spoil the report; it spoils the next budget decision.

Definition

What is server-side GTM?

Server-side GTM is a Google Tag Manager container that runs on your server instead of in the user's browser. The browser sends a single event to an address on your domain, and from there the data goes out to the advertising and analytics systems. Measurement stops depending on what the browser allows to run. Google's documentation calls this way of working server-side tagging, and in the industry you will also see it shortened to sGTM.

Measurement on your domain

Events go to your server, not directly to third-party scripts.

One source, many systems

A single event from the store feeds every connected system, each with its own tag and its own set of fields.

Control over what leaves

On the server you decide which data leaves your infrastructure and in what form.

Scope of work

What does a server-side tagging implementation look like, step by step?

Four stages, each with a deadline. On your side there is access to grant and one decision to make: what exactly we count as an order.

  1. 1

    Tracking audit

    1 week

We match orders from your store against events in the ad platforms. We check where most of them go missing: in which browsers and at which checkout step.

  2. 2

    Server and container

    1-2 weeks

We set up the server container on your domain: in Google Cloud on Cloud Run or App Engine, or with a container hosting provider such as Stape. The choice depends on traffic and on who will maintain it afterwards.

  3. 3

    Event migration

    2-4 weeks

We move events from the browser (client-side) container to the server container one at a time, starting with the purchase. We take care of deduplication along the way, so the same order is not counted twice.

  4. 4

    Verification and documentation

    1-2 weeks

We repeat the measurement from the first stage and show the difference on the same numbers. What remains is an inventory: which event goes to which system and with what data.

Four levels of tracking in one store

Mateusz Haber (the talk is in Polish) walks through the path from plain JavaScript, through a gateway and server-side GTM, to origin zero in a subdirectory, where cookies are first-party and live for up to two years. It also covers what no tag can fix: an order stuck in a bank payment that comes back only through a webhook.

Access to diagnostics on the platforms' side

An implementation is finished only when the platform confirms the events have reached it. Partner statuses give us a view of that answer at the source, not just in the analytics tool.

Google Premier Partner

Google, top tier of the Google Partners programme

When the ad platform and the report drift apart, we have a route to raise it on Google's side, not just our own hypothesis. On top of that, access to features before their public launch.

Meta Business Partner

Meta, programme for advertising agencies

On Meta's side, browser events and server events do not count the same way. Partner status gives us access to event match quality diagnostics, without which a server setup is guesswork.

Microsoft Advertising Elite Partner

Microsoft, highest tier of the programme

A third channel in which the same tracking has to be confirmed separately. We read the numbers in the Microsoft Advertising dashboard, because only there can you see what reached it.

Doubts before working together

Four things we hear before the decision

The first three come up in every conversation with the person who decides on the budget. The fourth we hear from technical teams, and we answer it differently.

„It is a way around cookie consent”

Consent governs what leaves, just as it does today. We connect Consent Mode to the server container, and the documentation records which event goes out under which consent.

„That is a lot to pay for tracking”

These are two different amounts. You pay for the implementation once, while the orders that never reach the ad platforms cost you every month. The audit gives you that second number before we sign anything.

„Even after implementation we will not see everything”

You will not, and we say so before the quote, not after the first report. Server-side tracking reduces the loss, it does not eliminate it, and what remains outside the container we describe in the documentation rather than keep quiet about.

„Our developer can do it themselves”

They can, if they know Meta CAPI, Enhanced Conversions and event deduplication. The implementations that come to us for repair are most often the ones missing that third item. If your team has all three, we sell just the audit and documentation.

Limits of the service

How does this differ from analytics and from a data warehouse?

Short answer

Analytics sets up events and consent, meaning what you measure in the first place. Server-side GTM decides how to send them so they arrive despite blockers. A data warehouse calculates profit from them after product cost and returns.

Not every store fits this service, and we say so in the first conversation, not in the third month of working together. We do not run campaigns as part of this implementation, so we have nothing to stretch its scope for.

Three levels of working with data: correct events, sending from the server and a warehouse with profit; this service is the second level

This is the service

  • The ad platform sees noticeably fewer orders than the store.
  • The ad budget is large enough that algorithms make most of the decisions.
  • You already have events and consent set up correctly in GA4 and GTM.

Start with something else

  • Events are counted wrongly or not at all: start with analytics configuration.
  • You are asking how much is left after product cost and returns: that is a data warehouse.
  • The ad budget is small: the implementation will not pay for itself, and we say so before the quote.
Pricing

How much does a server-side GTM implementation cost?

The prices below are ours. You pay for the server and the consent tool directly to the providers, because that cost depends on store traffic and stays on your side even if we stop working together. We give the ranges for those amounts in the FAQ below the pricing.

FAQ

Server-side tagging: questions before you decide

How much does server-side GTM cost?

Implementation starts from €2,940 net as a one-off; maintenance and tracking monitoring after implementation are monthly fees we quote together with it. On top of that come infrastructure costs on your side: Cloudflare about EUR 5 a month, CookieBot from EUR 15 to 90, Stape.io from EUR 20 to 200, depending on traffic.

Is it the same as regular GTM?

No. A regular web container runs in the user's browser, that is client-side, and is subject to its limits. A server container runs on your infrastructure, so measurement does not depend on what the browser allows to run. The two usually work side by side.

Does it bypass user consent?

No, and it is not meant to. Server-side tracking changes where the code runs, not what the user agreed to. Consent refused in the browser stays refused on the server, so your GDPR obligations do not change one bit.

When does it pay for itself?

It depends on two things: how many orders do not come back to the platforms today and what share of the budget goes into automated campaigns. The audit gives the first number, you know the second from the dashboard, so we do this calculation before the contract, not after a quarter.

Will server-side tracking catch every order?

No, and anyone who promises that has not measured it on their own store. At Surf Inc., a brand we co-created, about a third of orders bypass a correctly implemented server-side container: because of cold starts, blockers and events sent straight from the store's back end. Implementation reduces the loss, it does not eliminate it.

Server-side GTM versus client-side tagging

How to tell it is your case

The store reports more orders than the ad platforms, and the gap persists month after month. The second signal: several systems count the same sales in different ways and no report agrees with another.

What changes after implementation

A change to the store template breaks tracking less often, because one request stays in the page code instead of several third-party scripts. Adding another ad platform then becomes configuration in the container, not another implementation on the store side.

What it does not solve

It does not replace consent, it does not fix a wrongly calculated margin and it does not tidy up a product feed. It is tracking infrastructure, not strategy, so we implement it together with analytics configuration, not instead of it.

How server-side tagging works

Server-side tagging splits the work between two containers. The web container in the browser collects an event, for example a purchase, and sends it in a single request to an address on your domain. The server container receives it through a client, and server-side tags pass the data on, separately to Google Analytics 4, Google Ads or Meta CAPI. Each tag sees only the fields you pass to it.

What we do around this tracking

Sending events is not enough on its own: someone still has to count them correctly and turn them into a budget decision. The three services below do those two things, each with its own scope and its own quote.

First the number, then the decision to implement

The audit ends with one number: how many orders from the store come back to the ad platforms and how many disappear along the way. If that gap turns out to be small, we will say so and not sell you an implementation.
